Encouraging philanthropy is about teaching others to show empathy and work to make a difference in the world. It is also a way of sharing a common passion with loved ones and thus serves many excellent purposes.

Teaching charity and philanthropy to children is a goal that many parents have. Yet it can be challenging to encourage the entire family to embrace this concept. However, it is possible to do so with a bit of time, some patience, and adherence to the following advice.

Lead By Example

One of the best ways to encourage philanthropy or any good habit is leading by example. One must set a good example instead of relying on the phrase ‘do as I say, not as I do.’

Parents should take the time to volunteer with their children whenever possible. Siblings and cousins can get together for fundraising events. There are countless ways for a family to come together and help out.

Provide Alternatives

Not everyone has the money to donate. Many people in this world would donate if they had the money to do so. Therefore, it is beneficial to encourage other avenues for philanthropy. Consider pushing friends and family to volunteer for an event or organization or find another creative solution.

Make it a Tradition

Many of us hold on strong to the traditions we were raised with. It seems only natural to use this fondness for traditions to do something good. Begin a philanthropic tradition, and keep it up every year. Eventually, it will become a part of your family’s life — something they do naturally and happily.

Make it Personal

The best way to reach different individuals is by creating an approach unique to them. Talk to various family members directly, and even consider encouraging other activities (such as recommending volunteering at an animal shelter to a dog lover).

Make it Fun

People are more likely to do something when they actively enjoy doing so. As such, one of the best ways to encourage philanthropy within your family is by making it fun. For example, consider donating to a charity or organization that puts children first, as this will help your children see the benefits with their own eyes.
